I'm new to tractors and need one for land clearing and moving large tree stems within 10 miles. I am onsidering a Valtra N or T series with a $40-60K budget after crane costs. What should I check when buying used? How many hours are too many and what ongoing costs should I expect?

For a used Valtra N or T in your price range, check the engine and hydraulics for leaks or damage and look at how well its been maintained. Around 3k - 5k hours is okay if cared for, but fewer hours is better. Expect regular upkeep like oil and filter changes, plus some parts wear over time. Do you have any specific models or sellers in mind so far?

Ongoing costs include fuel, routine maintenance (oil, filters, hydraulic fluid), tires, and occasional parts like hydraulic seals or PTO components. Also factor in crane maintenance and attachments.

Don;t forget the visual inspection for rust or potential damage that the previous owner didn't mention. Start the engine cold and see how it runs, give it a quick spin to see if you notice any noises that shouldn't be there. If you're not 100%, maybe take with you someone who does.
